Korimako PurePod
Nestled into native bush along the Greta Valley coastline
Description
Views out to the bay and across to Motunau Island
The Korimako PurePod is just 90 minutes drive north-east from Christchurch, nestled into native bush along the Greta Valley coastline, with beautiful views out to the bay and across to Motunau Island. On a clear day you can see right down to Banks Peninsula and with an abundance of birdlife in the native bush surrounding the PurePod, you will be treated to a gentle chorus of birdsong throughout your stay.
The Journey
Your journey to the Korimako PurePod starts with a scenic drive through a beautiful and historic farming area. Take your time and enjoy the scenery, which switches from rolling farmland to forest and back to farmland again. If you are lucky you might even get to see a cow or two wandering right beside the road or meet the local farmer moving a mob of sheep along the road.
After about 25 minutes you will reach the PurePod carpark. Leave your large luggage items in your locked car (it will be safe) then follow the walking track as it gently winds its way up through the native bush.
The walk is just under 450m and will take you around 10 minutes (or a little longer depending on how many times you stop for photos). As you walk, keep an ear out for all the birds, including bellbirds (korimako), fantails (piwakawaka) and the occasional rifleman (tītipounamu).
Turn around and take in the breathtaking views
As you round the last corner you will get your first glimpse of the Korimako PurePod, sitting in a small clearing surrounded by native bush. Once you get up to the PurePod, turn around and take in the breathtaking views out to the bay and Motunau Island. In the early days of this farm, the only access was by sea, so any stores or materials sent to or from the farm went via this bay – imagine what it was like loading heavy wool onto small boats to be ferried out to the coastal trader ships on a cold winters day!
Sit back, relax & enjoy
Once you are at the PurePod, you can sit back, relax, soak in the views and enjoy a complete absence of people. Comfortable deck chairs are provided, as is the most comfortable bed we can find.
The PurePod has all the facilities you require including a fabulous shower, flush toilet, crisp linen, cooking and eating equipment including a gas hob and barbeque, tea coffee and milk; as well as an assortment of games, local reference books, a telescope and a whole lot of nothing to do!
If you are staying for a couple of days, perhaps set aside some time to check out some of the local sights, whether that’s the wineries down the road in Waipara, walking along the Motunau Beach, finding a good fishing spot at the Hurunui River mouth or experiencing the thrill of a jet boat ride on the Hurunui River with Energy Jet.
