While the tree houses are unique and something special, the dining experience at the restaurant is one to be remembered. You can expect to receive five star service delivering carefully prepared michelin star quality produce. The lodge prides itself on using locally sourced produce, either gathered from the grounds or where ever possible, from the local community. Being right by the sea it will come as no surprise to see freshly caught seafood on the menu. If you have a love of seafood you will appreciate the deliciously prepared rock crayfish – a culinary experience not to be missed.
Daily modifications are made to the menu to take advantage of seasonal foods and keeping with the lodges philosophy of ‘sourcing local with minimal waste’. Something that really resonates with me. Expect to taste local cheeses, breads, jellies and even the the lodges very own olive oil – This is a dining experience where ‘local is king’.
Let’s get busy
You are spoilt for choice with the location of the lodge offering a variety of options to explore the local region. Grab your shoes and head by foot on one of the surrounding walks – head to the beach or perhaps a bush walk. Arrange a picnic basket and hop on one of the lodges mountain bikes heading out on one of the local Hapuku trails.
Being close to the eco-tourism town of Kaikoura you will find an abundance of marine wildlife, the most famous of which the region is famous for – the Giant Sperm Whale. To head out whale watching this is in no doubt the best place in New Zealand to do it. With a year round 95% success rate; your viewing chances are extremely high, providing you with the ultimate marine experience.
While Kaikoura is famous for whale watching you are also likely to see other marine life. You can walk the Kaikoura Peninsula walkway (an easy 11km walk) and get to view the seal colony. Or even for a closer look and a change of a dusky dolphin or blue penguin encounter take to the sea on one of the kayaking expeditions – this is a well worth it experience – even for the incredible perspective it provides of the stunning backdrop as you glide out to sea in your kayak.
